Low carbon aluminium has considerable potential to help consumers lower their carbon footprint. Strategies that make use of low-carbon primary aluminium, in conjunction with other approaches that take advantage of aluminium’s sustainable credentials, can significantly reduce the environmental impact of many products. Understanding and monitoring embodied carbon trade flows is important to consumers developing carbon abatement strategies.
On June 5 2020, the LME announced it will launch a spot trading platform for low-carbon aluminium next
year. The LME said “
We
are actively engaging with our stakeholders on environmental sustainability
issues – particularly in the aluminium sector, and are committed to supporting
initiatives that facilitate the global transition to a low-carbon economy.
Our plans include the launch of a scrap aluminium contract to support
price risk management, as well as working with the market to investigate a
standalone spot trading platform for the exchange of aluminium warrants,
enabling downstream users to procure metal with their required characteristics,
such as low carbon.
