He oversees a portfolio of services covering the key points along the steel value chain, including prices, supply and demand dynamics, and costs. Previously, Chris was the Analysis Lead for CRU’s global research in crude steel and ferrous metallics, and was editor of CRU's Crude Steel Market Outlook and Metallics Market Outlook. Chris joined CRU in April 2014 after having worked in the steel industry for 14 years across a range of strategy, supply chain and operational roles.

Dr. Carmen Ostwald studied chemistry in Bochum, Brighton and at the Fritz Haber Institute in Berlin. She completed her doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research in Düsseldorf. Furthermore, she holds an MBA in Business Administration from ESMT in Berlin.

Since 2001, she has held various management positions at thyssenkrupp in the areas of research and development, strategy, energy and production, including as team leader of energy management and optimization and head of the casting rolling mill.

Since 2020, Dr. Carmen Ostwald has been Head of Business Development for the CO2-reduced bluemint® steel products from thyssenkrupp Steel Europe.

He provides a vast experience in the steel industry, including production, sales, marketing and leadership roles outside the company i.e. at WorldAutoSteel. Dr. Adam joined Tata Steel in 2011 as Chief Commercial Officer for the Tata Steel Europe, following his tenure as CEO of ThyssenKrupp Electrical Steel and various roles at ThyssenKrupp before. Born in Essen, Germany, he holds a mechanical engineering degree and specializes in automotive engineering and materials application. Dr. Adam's career began in 1991 in vehicle safety technologies, later advancing to Managing Director of a German engineering consultancy. His contributions have shaped the industry's direction, emphasizing innovation and excellence in steel manufacturing.

José Noldin is the CEO of GravitHy, a company launched by a world-class and international industrial consortium that aims to accelerate the decarbonization of the global steel industry by producing direct reduced iron (DRI) from low-carbon hydrogen. Martin Pei has a bachelor of science in ferrous metallurgy from Northeastern University, Shenyang, China and a doctorate in process metallurgy from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. Mr. Pei started his working experience in 1994 at Danieli and since 2001 he has been with SSAB, Sweden.

Since 2007, he has served as executive vice president and CTO at SSAB. During 2010 and 2014, he also served as head of SSAB Business Area APAC. Mr. Pei is the initiator of the HYBRIT initiative, a cooperation between SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall and served as the first-term chairman of board for Hybrit Development AB. He is currently chairman of board for SWERIM—the Swedish Research Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Metals Research. Mr. Pei is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy for Engineering Sciences.

Stéphane joined Sollac, a former company of ArcelorMittal in the automotive sales division in 1998 where he held several positions, from market development engineer, through key account manager and finally heading an automotive sales area. Since 2013, he has been Chief Marketing Officer in charge of Packaging, Oil and gas, and Electrical Steel segments within ArcelorMittal Europe Flat Products. Additionally, in March 2020, he took the role of Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Avelino & Canossa in Italy. Stéphane holds a degree as sales engineer from the Esidec business school in Metz (France).

Paul moved to CRU's newly-formed Sustainability team in August 2021 where he is working closely with clients and internally on carbon market and energy transition issues. Paul joined CRU in 2012 and, latterly, was responsible for CRU's analysis across the whole steel value chain, from raw materials through to finished steel, as well as CRU's Steel cost services, a comprehensive suite of cost models covering iron ore mining, coal mining, steelmaking and ferroalloys operations worldwide.

Paul has 31 years' experience in the steel industry, having worked for Tata Steel, Corus, British Steel and the International Iron and Steel Institute (now the WorldSteel Association) in a range of environmental, strategic, business development, planning and technical roles.

Paul holds an MBA from Warwick Business School, a Ph.D in Theoretical Chemistry and a BSc. Honours Chemistry degree from Manchester University. He is a Chartered Chemist and Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (CChem MRSC). Paul is based in CRU's Singapore office.

Aysemin Top Gül started her professional career as a Project Assistant at a research center conducting projects in the field of aviation. Then, in 2019, she started working as a Product Development Engineer at Ford Otosan in different vehicle programs. Since 2022, she has been conducting sustainable material applications such as recycled and renewable plastics, biopolymers, bio-fillers, green steel, etc., following regulatory demands, contributing to the company's sustainability goals, leading and supporting funded projects related to sustainable material applications. She holds a bachelor's and master's degree in Materials Engineering.

Frank joined CRU Sustainability in June 2021 as an external Consultant. He has over 20 years of experience as an economist working in both the private and public sectors. He has worked in the UK, Germany and the United States. Prior to joining CRU, Frank was Senior Advisor at the Bank of England. Frank started his career at the Economist Intelligence Unit. From there he moved on to HM Treasury, the UK's finance ministry, where he worked on fiscal frameworks and helped establish the UK's assessment of fiscal sustainability. He also worked at the German Federal Finance Ministry and helped set up a thought leadership programme at Pension Corporation.

Frank joined the IMF Fiscal Affairs Department in 2011. He was involved in the IMF's Romania programme and co-led on pension reforms. Frank is interested in the intersection between the real economy and capital markets, and how green finance can help the transition to a low carbon economy. Frank holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics. James has over 25 years steel industry experience in a variety of market-focused roles. He heads CRU’s finished steel analysis team, providing thought leadership and guidance across flat products, long products and industry decarbonisation, including green steel.Prior to joining CRU, James worked for Tata Steel where he fulfilled a number of commercial roles in the UK and the Netherlands.

As well as being a member of the UK strip products commercial management team, James has worked in both strategic and operational marketing roles. Industry experience includes managing market insight, price policy, forecasting and strategy.James joined CRU in 2017 and managed CRU’s sheet steel and long products forecast services before moving to his current role.He holds a BSc (Hons) in Applied Chemistry from Aston University and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Birmingham, UK.

Jamie Mcleod is a Senior Manager in Crowe UK’s dedicated Customs team, advising and supporting clients from a broad range of sectors on managing their cross-border trade activities. The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has become an increasing area of focus for the team, supporting UK exporters and EU importers alike with understanding their CBAM obligations and developing management processes, with a particular focus on the steel industry. The team are also actively engaged in the plans for development of UK CBAM, which is due to be implemented in 2027.

Paulo Carvalho is a green steel and iron ore market expert, helping clients navigate the commercial and value chain opportunities emerging from steel decarbonisation. He has recently supported the financing of green steel & HBI plants in Europe and the Middle East, assisted a global steelmaker’s renewables and scrap usage claims, established a raw materials buyer’s supplier due diligence framework, and designed a global miner’s ESG data & disclosure strategy.

Göran Nyström is a past EVP Marketing and Technology at Ovako, now working half time as Senior Advisor. Göran is also a partner of FerroSilva AB, a start-up that for producing fossil-free sponge iron energy-efficiently.

Ovako is a leading European producer of long special steel products for the bearing, hydraulics, automotive and other engineering industries. Ovako is part of the Nippon Steel Group, a leading steel producer in the world. Göran was 24 years with Sandvik in Group VP positions and holds a Master of Science in Materials Physics.

Mark Broderick is the Global Head of Procurement at Kingspan Group. He has extensive Global Procurement experience, working for multi-national companies across different industries and has also held Senior General Management roles. Mark leads the Kingspan Group steel decarbonisation agenda as part of Kingspan’s Planet Passionate programme. In 2021 he was appointed to the H2 Green Steel investment advisory board following Kingspan’s investment.

Matt Watkins leads CRU's forecast work on steel sheet globally and is also the European flat steel analyst.  He has worked in the commodities industry since 2001 in a variety of analysis, marketing and consulting roles including 13 years at CRU and over 6 years at Rio Tinto. 

Matt holds a BSc in Geology from the University of Durham, and an MSc in Mineral Exploration from Imperial College, London.

Pierre Voutsinos joined the Volvo Group Purchasing organization in 2006 as flat steel segment leader before being appointed lead flat steel buyer in the Fossil Free Raw Materials Team in 2022, to accelerate contribution to Net Zero greenhouse gas ambition by 2040. He won the Volvo Group Purchasing award 2021 in category sustainable for real and the Republik HA Purchasing Trophy 2022 in co-working category for the launch in June 2022 of the world’s first low CO2e emission steel truck.

He has previously filled several positions in purchasing organization for 12 years, such as a mechanical commodity buyer at Alstom, plastic parts commodity buyer at Alcatel-Lucent and project buyer at Valeo. Since 2014, he has been serving the Lyon 3 University by providing courses to Purchasing Master 2 Degree students. Pierre Voutsinos holds a Strategic Purchasing Management Master Degree from the Institut d’Administration des Entreprises (DESMA) in Grenoble and is a French citizen.

Thomas Hörnfeldt is Vice President Sustainable Business at SSAB. He has an MBA from Uppsala University and an MSc from KTH in Stockholm. He has vast experience in general management & sales, market intelligence as well as sustainability. He has been Managing Director of Ruukki Sverige, Senior Vice President Special Steels & International Sales at Ruukki Metals Ltd, Vice President at Atlas Copco Dynapac and Vice President Corporate Marketing & Sales at steel provider Ovako. The career started at ABB, which he left as Vice President in 2004, after almost 13 years of management positions in the metals industry activities. He has unique insights into the incorporation of sustainability into the business model of the organization.

After finishing my engineering studies with a Master’s Degree, I started with a procurement job in the automotive industry 30 years ago. At the beginning I started with steel components as fasteners, tubular products, forgings and others while later I became responsible for the flat steel and aluminium procurement on a global base, which is also my current responsibility. During my professional life I also gained international experience and stayed some years in Brasil, Italy and China. Currently my main topics besides the standard procurement activities is the green transition, which comes with lots of topics like the CBAM, supplier and customer targets for decarbonisation, increasing trade barriers, setting up our own plan for the decarbonisation and concluding agreements to make it happen.

Christophe Roux has more than 30 years' experience financing and advising natural resources production and transformation projects and has worked in Frankfurt, Singapore, Paris and London.he has led SG's Batteries, Mining and Industries team in CEMA region since 2017 and has more particularly drove the shift of the team's focus towards investments into the energy transition and supervised the execution of several large multisource advisory and arranging mandates, many of whom were to support investments in low carbon metallurgy.

Eldar has over 20 years of banking and finance experience across Loan and Bonds structuring and advisory. He joined BNP Paribas in 2011 and is now part of the Transition Minerals, Metals & Batteries team in the Low Carbon Transition Group based in London. He is a Managing Director in charge of developing the bank’s investment banking activities with a particular focus on steel companies having advised and structured some of the largest acquisition and greenfield project finance transactions.

Erik heads ING's Frankfurt based Metals, Mining & Fertilizers sector coverage team. He has over 10 years of experience in covering the metals sector for ING. In this time, he has structured, coordinated, and executed a wide range of financial solutions for clients across the industry. In addition, Erik acts as Global Steel Lead within ING. As such he is responsible for setting the banks commercial strategy towards the sector.

It was in this responsibility that he led the development of the Sustainable Steel Principles, which were launched in the fall of 2022 and for which he acts as chair of the related association. The Sustainable Steel Principles are the first climate aligned finance agreement for the steel sector. This landmark agreement comprises a methodology for banks to report the carbon intensity of their steel portfolio, as well as engagement tools to facilitate client engagement to further decarbonization in the sector.

Greg Falzon has worked in infrastructure for over 20 years and is Co-Head of Investments at AIP Management, a Nordic energy transition investor with EUR 7bn AUM.

Greg oversees the origination and execution of investments, with a particular focus on debt investments and industrial decarbonisation. Before joining AIP, he was the Head of European Infrastructure at BMO, and previously, an MD leading RBC’s infrastructure debt advisory team in London. He holds a M.A. in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge.

Greg led the team at AIP that acted as the lead second lien investor to H2GreenSteel providingEUR300m out of the 600m facility.

Gareth has over 20 years of experience working in businesses focused on the production and processing of steel. Immavera Sardone is Policy Officer at the European Commission, Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW) since 2022. She works in the Unit on Energy Intensive Industries and Raw Materials, where she contributes to the development of policies for the competitiveness and decarbonisation of the steel industry.

Prior to joining the Commission, Immavera worked for over 10 years in the private sector, focusing on climate and energy policies for industry. Immavera holds a Master’s Degree in European Political and Administrative Studies from the College of Europe.

Jacob Couture is a member of the Industry Monitoring and Analysis Unit in the Office of Trade Agreements Policy & Negotiations within International Trade Administration and the U.S. Department of Commerce. As a member of the team, Jacob monitors the global aluminum and steel industries, follows trade actions taken around the world, and assists in negotiations, all to support U.S. industry efforts to compete on a level playing field in the international marketplace.

Jacob has a keen interest in data visualization and covers the growing environmental portfolio, monitoring international developments in steel decarbonization and its growing connection to U.S. trade policy.

Jacob began his career at the Department of Commerce in 2020. He graduated from Georgetown University with a BSFS in International Political Economy.

Alli Devlin is the Senior Decarbonisation Advisor at ResponsibleSteel, and last year completed her PhD in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford as a John Monash Scholar. Her thesis was titled, “The New Steel Map: Reconfiguring Supply Chains Around Renewable Resources.”

Before the PhD, Alli spent over 5 years with Lendlease in the construction industry as a Site Engineer, working on significant Australian transport infrastructure projects. She completed a Bachelor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Technology, Sydney, during which she received the 2017 New Colombo Plan Fellowship to study and work in Vietnam for 14 months

Gilles Miron is the Chief Commercial Officer of Hydnum Steel. He is an experienced Manager of international sales teams in the steel industry for all flat carbon product in EMEA and NAFTA . Has a strong management sales record in term of sales numbers and improving margins but also maintaining customer satisfaction and building strong customer relationship finding their steel solutions .
Gilles has developed advanced skills in International Project Management, Marketing Management, Operations Management, International Business, and Sales Management.

Marian is the Global Head of Risk & Sustainability at Liberty Steel Group – a global steel manufacturer with an ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030. Marian was previously Managing Director at Redington and, before that, led Deloitte’s Trustee Advisory business in London.

Marian is a Fellow of the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries and a member of the Global Association of Risk Professionals, with a certificate in Sustainability & Climate Risk Management. She is also a Non-Executive Director on the Board of USS Ltd, a c. $100bn institutional investor based in the UK.

Rutger Gyllenram is a Swedish process metallurgist focusing on resource conservation and decarbonisation. James has over 25 years steel industry experience in a variety of market-focused roles. He heads CRU’s finished steel analysis team, providing thought leadership and guidance across flat products, long products and industry decarbonisation, including green steel.Prior to joining CRU, James worked for Tata Steel where he fulfilled a number of commercial roles in the UK and the Netherlands.

As well as being a member of the UK strip products commercial management team, James has worked in both strategic and operational marketing roles. Kostiantyn joined CRU Consulting in October 2018 as an associate consultant, based in Ukraine but working as part of the London team, where he manages a diverse set of projects in steel and ferrous raw materials with a focus on market feasibility studies, long term scenario evaluation, market segmentation and product strategies.Kostiantyn specialises in the CIS region and also provides support in other commodities such as aluminium and fertilizers.   

Kostiantyn has 15 years of experience in the industry ranging from steel and steel products to iron ore and manganese ferroalloys, having worked at Metinvest and Interpipe in a range of strategic analysis, business development and marketing roles based in Ukraine and in Europe, as well as in equity research in investment banking as a metals and mining analyst. Kostiantyn earned a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) from the International Institute of Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland (2014). He is secretary to the worldsteel Technology Committee (TECO), CO2 Breakthrough Programme and leads the ‘StepUp’ programme which is aimed at improvements in mill operations to efficiency levels commensurate with the steel industry’s top performers for emissions and energy intensity using existing proven installed technology and best practices.
