09:00 Site visit to Chuquicamata and Ministro Hales departs

Chuquicamata Division

Chuquicamata Division has 6106 full time workers and 8101 contractors. In 2015, it produced 308,625 metric tonnes of refined copper. In operation since 1915 it is the region’s principal porphyry copper deposit. Production will decrease from 550kt/d in 2010 to 122kt/d in 2019 when the mine reaches the end of its life. Once the open-pit mine reaches the end of its economic life in 2019 production at the underground mine will commence. High throughput mining techniques will yield an extraction rate of 140 ktpd with a 0.7% grade and molybdenum at 500 ppm.

The concentrator processes minerals from the Chuquicamata and RT mines obtaining copper concentrates (33%) and Molybdenum (1%). The copper concentrate (8% moisture, 30% Cu, 0.8% Ace, 250 ppm Sb) is dried and sent to the 2500 tpd convertor and the 3000 tpd Flash Outotec melting furnace and then to the 4 Pierce-Smith reactor. The copper is molded into 420 kg anodes for refining. The refinery has an annual capacity of 540 Kt.

Ministro Hales Division

On September 1, 2010, Minister Hales Division (DMH) was formed. The mine is located five kilometers north of the city of Calama, in the Second Region of Antofagasta. With a useful life of more than 50 years DMH is a world-class reserve with resources in excess of 1,300 million tons and an average grade of 0.96% of copper. Codelco invested over US $ 3.2 billion in DMH, its largest ever investment. Between April 2011 and June 2013, the largest pre-stripping in global mining history was carried and 228 million tons of material was removed. During 2015 an annual production of 238,000 tons of fine copper and around 260 tons of silver was achieved.

DMH is Codelco's youngest division and has a staff of approximately 770 People (13% of them women). The mine will be open pit for its first 14 years before moving underground and extending production until the age of 50. The minerals at DMH are characterized by high levels of arsenic. The largest roasting complex in the world has been constructed to produce calcine with less than 0.3% arsenic.

17:00 Site visit finishes and delegates return to Santiago for the World Copper Conference
