Speaker Q&A

Göran Nyström: Leading the Charge in Steel Decarbonization

In the build up to the event, we spoke to Göran Nyström, Senior Advisor at Ovako, he shares insights on critical drivers for steel decarbonization, the impact of Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and the R&D areas essential for reducing emissions. As the industry accelerates its transition to a lower-carbon future, Göran sees both challenges and opportunities for Ovako, a company committed to low emissions and high circularity.

How will CBAM affect the steel supply chain?

CBAM will hopefully ensure fairer competition between steel producers from different regions. Our concern is that a too narrow scope of products may incentivise a transfer of production out of EU, e.g. forging, to avoid the CBAM.

What are the key drivers for steel decarbonisation?

Most important is legislation, which we can clearly see. Beyond this the cradle to gate approach is fundamental, i.e. to include Scope 3 upstream in company ambitions. To vote with your wallet , the Science Based Targets Initiative has been important in this regard.

How does the pricing premium for decarbonized steel affect the competitiveness of European steel producers in the global market?

It will provide a critically important incentive for early movers. The risk otherwise is that too many steel companies hold back their actions and await a second wave position - with more proven technology and lower investment costs.

What areas of R&D are critical for achieving significant reductions in steel industry emissions?

The reduction of iron ore to metallic iron, energy-efficiently, the reversal of a copper build-up in the steel scrap circulation, and the introduction of fossil-free high temperature combustion are all important, but let us also not forget the major benefits that higher performing steels will have in end-user applications. This remains a central R&D and marketing priority.

The transition to a new, lower carbon steel industry is accelerating quickly. What opportunities do you see for your organisation?

We see significant opportunities, and especially since we are already a leading company in both low emissions and high circularity. As well as in positive climate actions. At the same time, the industry landscape will change and provide challenges too. Ultimately, the companies most fit for survival will prosper and we will ensure to belong to that category.
