Arrival and Welcome at NIEHOFF Nymburk

Maschinenfabrik NIEHOFF (CZ), s.r.o. (NCZ) is one of the manufacturing subsidiaries of NIEHOFF Group (Germany) located in Nymburk, about 50 km east of Prague, Czech Republic.   Founded in 2000 on a 30,000 m² site, NCZ today operates a state-of-the-art factory after several plant expansions, producing cutting-edge machines for the manufacture of wires and cables to NIEHOFF´s high standards. Under the management of Petr Vajsejtl, NCZ has a workforce of more than 160 employees and a production range that comprises NIEHOFF bunchers and stranders, braiders, rod breakdown annealers and coilers. Just to mention a few interesting details about the production in Nymburk: NCZ not only features a highly modern and efficient cycle assembly for braiders and bunchers, it also has an additional special test stand where the large stranders such as type D 2002 and D 1602 can be tested and demonstrated under production conditions on purpose-built foundations. NCZ´s manufacturing operations include final assembly, testing and shipping to the parent company, NIEHOFF Schwabach, located near Nuremberg around 350 km to the west.

NCZ is a key economic partner for the Czech industry, supports the training of future generations and offers future-oriented traineeships and jobs in technical and commercial fields.

Global Wire and Cable Market Driven by Electrification and Digitalisation

Our industry is witnessing transformative change, driven by global emissions targets, geopolitical power shifts, and rapid technological advancements. As a result, while global cable consumption is growing steadily, variable and dynamic regional trends are evident. Asia-Pacific continues to lead with robust infrastructure and electrification investment, while China focuses on balancing domestic recovery while servicing its export markets. North America and Europe are navigating the implications of high interest rates alongside policy challenges to support renewable energy and data centre growth.

Alongside this, regional protectionism and shifting trade flows continue to present significant challenges for the wire and cable industry, disrupting established supply chains and forcing companies to adapt by localising production and diversifying sources of raw materials. Despite these hurdles, the industry remains at the forefront of enabling the global energy transition and the GenAI-led computing revolution.

CRU's presentation will focus on how to navigate emerging wire and cable trends and seize new opportunities in electrification, digitalisation and beyond.

Keynote: Exploring the Role of Batteries in Grid Expansion

  • With grid bottlenecks and lag times increasing, project developers and grid operators are looking for ways to reduce costs and optimise grid utilisation
  • The falling cost of battery energy storage systems (BESS) may provide significant benefits to renewable energy project developers and grid operators alike
  • By combining batteries with solar, project developers can reduce their requirement for large grid connections
  • Meanwhile, grid operators can increase grid occupancy, mitigating the peaks and troughs inherent to renewable power generation due to the intermittency of renewable resources
  • In the longer term, colocation of generation, storage and demand may further reduce pressure on grid expansion
  • This keynote presentation will examine the challenges and opportunities provided by BESS

Data Centre Power and Cables: Framing Sustainability in a Way that Makes Sense to the Hyperscalers

Electrical cables are often the biggest single unit item (by volume) in a hyperscale data centre. Tens of thousands of metres, providing power to critical systems where unplanned downtime is not an option.

Performance, reliability, embodied carbon, lifespan, and ethical procurement are all increasingly interwoven into the specification, and the use of green and renewable energy, both in the supply chain and in the ongoing operation of the data centre, is a key consideration.

Data Centres are facing challenges: power demands increasing with AI, restrictions on locations due to limitations on power availability, the operational uptime demands for Tier 1 sites, and the necessity for cooling (and heat reuse). So how are they approaching these challenges with sustainability in mind?

  • Easy wins – framing existing actions in a sustainability language
  • Product innovations & project practicalities
  • The benefits of geography and why community engagement matters
  • Renewable Energy, SMRs, Battery Storage, and higher Power Transmission voltages
  • Enlisting help – what the cable industry can do to support this

Securing European Cable Manufacturing for a Green Transition made in Europe for Europe

  • Europe has all it needs to decarbonise and digitalise: the European cable industry has the technologies, the experience, the expertise, the people and the capacities to electrify and connect Europe.
  • European cable manufacturers are actively pushing high sustainability performances in their production and in their products to reduce their carbon footprint. Doing so comes with significant investments in research and innovation. Sustainability should be valued and accounted for.
  • The unilateral openness of the European Market for the upcoming, significant power grid and telecoms network buildout makes it vulnerable to unfair and dumping practices.
  • Consistent EU policy-making is needed, recognising the strategic role of cable technologies. Legislation needs to strengthen and not undermine the European cable manufacturing base while ensuring a timely, reliable and socially acceptable telecom and power grids buildout.
